Writing about art work –
This year we will be writing more narratively than we have in the past – not to worry it hasn’t changed - much.
You must make sure that you put in order -
A description of what the object/art work is – its shape, form, media.
Next describe the surface decoration – in ceramics – does it have things added or subtracted, is it made of coils or on the wheel?
Next - what is the glaze like? Where does it sit? Is it thick or thin? Opaque or clear – shiny or matte?
Finally you must draw a conclusion (compare and contrast!) – how do these elements work together (or not!) to make the art work compelling or interesting? You need to consider the art elements and how they work to communicate ideas, feeling or moods.
PLEASE AVOID SIMILES as much as possible – or statements like - It reminds me of the beach – or has a beach-like glaze… See if we can go for a bigger ideas about texture, sand … simulated texture
This year, unlike others, let’s try using the word I when it seems appropriate. Keeping in mind that while, I glazed it blue. is okay, it is glazed blue is better...
This will be an ongoing and evolving process – remember the reason to write about your work is to learn about it and to learn art elements!
See my first blog entry on Advanced Ceramics for an example of a paragraph.
