The room has gotten pretty messy... we need a job chart
But right now - Pd. four - advanced please sweep the back and pick up the laundry. beginners please sweep the areas around your work area find all the pots of dried up sludge and knock the dried clay into the 'buckets' so we can recycle the clay. Put the empty pinch pots by the sink with the red dish drainer.j Pd. five and six will have an extra long clean up time at the end of class so you can learn your clean up jobs. :) I have printed the directions and put them in a note book. Use this and the other note books to review directions and procedures as the semester continues.
We will start firing the bisque kiln next week. And talk more about it. Make sure you keep damp projects damp over the week-end and let finished pinch pots start to dry. Make sure you have entered notes for today! If I am out of note pages then make one with notebook paper. Today, plan on finishing your pinch pot and start to let it dry... remember the drying of your ceramic project is very important. If it dries unevenly or too fast it will break. First day - open bag second day - in locker, no bag third day on rack or bisque shelf. (Monday we will discuss the bisque process more in depth....) Today we will do the coil demo - guidelines are below. Remember to start new notes every time you start a project. coil lesson here... Remember all the rough spots will dry rough and we do not use sand paper, Smooth it when it is leather soft or leather hard.
Make sure your decorations are well defined and three-dimensional. Do not make lines, make edges... Remember this is a three-dimensional object so make sure it's interesting from all sides - front, side, back, side - as we turn it. Make sure as well that the project is the same thickness through - out so that it doesn't blow up in the kiln. Let's review the stages of drying clay... Thursday we will talk about coil pots so plan on finishing your pinch pot by the latest Friday. Check this out
Today we will continue working on our pinch projects. Molding works best when soft wet clay. Joining works best when leather soft. carving works best in leather hard. DO NOT cut the box apart or make the hole in the head until it is leather hard. When you are finished - about mid-week - make sure you have your name and per Remember to use the note sheets to document your progress every day. Write down where you put your project and what you got done. Take a photo with your phone - it will come in very handy if your project goes missing.
Think hard about three-dimensional decorations BUT remember that in ceramics anything that projects away from the project and that is thin and delicate is almost guaranted to break is the firing process. Anything that dries rough will end up sharp. :( If the thickness of your project is largely uneven it will heat up unevenly in the kiln and expand unevenly and will be prone to breakage or explosion! AND things that explode break other projects. (Very bad Karma!!!) We will start the next project on Wednesday. This one should be all finished by Sept. 16. Advanced students also check the calendar. Please make sure you have your first formal blog entry with a phot |
