how to write...
form - what is it? What assignment? what shape, box, tube, creature, bow.... soft-slab, wheel project... Use the present tense!! The verb IS... Surface - texture, pattern, coils, positive/negative space .... Color - what and where.... Opinion - why do we care??? art element.. - no similes - it's okay to describe a narrative element No words like that don't tell us anything like 'cool' unique, nice, interesting, different Please don't tell me what you will do with it - good bowl for cereal... Or the naration of how it was made... Let's review the demo on the documents page...
Now let's watch while I do the demo. All projects need to be footed for full credit. The foot ring pushes the project off the table and gives it a visual lift. It also will make and end point for the glaze so when we fire it it will not stick to the kiln shelf. There is a correct way to do it - it is important that the entire project is the same width in cross-section so that the project fires evenly and does not crack or break in the kiln due to heat expansion. All advanced students must email me a pic! Use the computers to do so now in class today. Also make sure your web-sites are updated by the end of school today. The grades will be final for this marking period. Zeros are not fun. Cleaning was better ... but... we still need some extra time - third period will have 18 mins of clean up today and fourth period 17 minutes... you folks did not clean up rings, buckets, bats, tools and the glaze room. When you are working please stand in your job area. Be aware that I am putting in participation grades today and that will be a large portion of what I have to grade you on at this point. Impress your art teacher who loves you!!! That and pay your fee by tomorrow!!!! Love your art room!!!! <3 ms. h Take NOTES I TOLD YOU IN THE BSEGINNING
TAKE NOTES AS YOU MAKE THE PROJECTS. DEATE STAMP THEM WHEN YOU START, WHEN YOU PUT IT ON THE BISQUE SHELF, AND WHEN YOU PUT IT ON THE GLAZE SHELF. ALL CLASSES LEFT SOME TOOLS, BUCKETS & RINGS OUT DIRTY!! ALL CLASSES LEFT SOME WHEELS ON. ALL CLASSES LEFT BAMBOO BRUSHES, AND WHISKS DIRTY IN THE GLAZE ROOM. :( :( :(
THEREFORE - UNTIL WE CAN ACTUALLY CLEAN THE ROOM, CLEAN UP TIME WILL START 15 MINS. IF THIS DOES NOT WORK WE WILL GO TO 20. PLEASE BE IN YOUR CLEAN UP AREA FOR THE ENTIRE TIME. MAKE SURE YOU ARE DONE ON THE WHEEL FIFTEEN MINS BEFORE THE BELL OR YOU WILL BE GRADED DOWN. I HATE TO BE HARSH, BUT I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE. :P LOOK ON THE REJECT SHELF - MANY PROJECTS HAVE NOT BEEN FIRED DUE TO THE FACT THERE IS GLAZE ON THE BASE OR BETWEEN THE LID AND THE BASE!!!! Quick footing demo - check under documents for the link to a slide show - will most likely be on Thursday, my projects are too wet still. Newbs - must turn in a project - pinch would be good - by Friday for a grade. Grades will be uploaded for mid-quareter reports at that time so I need something. You will also get a participation grade - and points if you have paid your fee! No poinits if you haven't!!! Also make sure you have paid your fee by Friday or we might not be using any materials... :( Advanced Students PLEASE SEND ME SOME PICTURES OF YOUR WORK - jpg format - so they can be used in a fine arts assembly that is coming up. I need the photos by Friday am. Send them to my school email - [email protected] I WILL BE CHECKING BLOGS TODAY. That is all I have to grade you on. Make sure your assignments are up on your blogs and I have your URL or you will get an F! if you don't like what you've made on the wheel - put the clay back in the mixer!!! NOT THE BUCKET!!!!
There are many projects on the reject shelf!!! Wash the glaze off of the base. ------- In order to grade a project you must show me the project and your notes. On the back of the notes should be a paragraph that describes your project in this form... Writting a paragraph is actually quite easy. You must do so on the back of your notes in order to get a project graded. (cd) - what is it? (cd)- what is the surface design? (cd)- what color(s) is it? (cd)- why do we care? - should refer to an art element - see the art elements on the documents tab or click here YOU MUST READ AND USE THESE! here is the link to the paragraph document... please read it and use it to model your paragraphs. Again copy and paste it into a Word document at home and print it out. The formating will then be better than it is on the google doc. Tomorrow - footing your project! Monday we will be doing an extra 15 mins cleaning at the beginning of each class -
pd 3 - move wheels and sweep pd 4 - wash buckets, tools, & rings pd 5 - re-do tool boxes - pin, stick, toothed rib, blue rib, small loop - only and with correct #s pd 6 - wash all surfaces and sludge (surfaces include wheels, chairs, large buckets...) When you go to the wheel - pair up - one will coach and the other throw - take the instructions with you! wheel demo today - study this at home! Link to demo slide show
also can be seen on 'documents' tab... Glaze is done but HOT - might not be unloaded today. Bisque is done - but hot and FRAGILE!!! PLEASE NOTE - this bisque which is a pink/orange color is slightly underdone - they can be glazed, however, you must be careful with them when you put the glaze on since they are more fragile than usual. - NOTICE some broken things have been mended with 'ARISET' kiln cement Monday we will be doing an extra 15 mins cleaning at the beginning of each class - pd 3 - move wheels and sweep pd 4 - wash buckets, tools, & rings pd 5 - re-do tool boxes - pin, stick, toothed rib, blue rib, small loop - only and with correct #s pd 6 - wash all surfaces and sludge (surfaces include wheels, chairs, large buckets...) LOOK AT THIS LINK TO FIND OUT HOW TO GLAZE!
News - another bisque is running - it will be out on Friday. Another bisque will run on Friday and be out on Tuesday. Remember it takes TWO days to run a bisque. One day for a glaze kiln... YOU MUST BE WRITING ON THE NOTES! NO GRADES WILL BE GIVEN TO PROJECTS WITHOUT NOTES. YOU CAN NOW REMAKE SOME, HOWEVER DON'T MAKE UP DATES. ON THE BACK YOU WILL BE WRITING A PARAGRAPH TO GRADE FROM. This quote is from my Nia Dance teach Dina Innominato who teaches at Nia Underground in Seattle.
If you think trying to work with clay in high school is daunting - try leaning to dance at my age and ability level! Let's face it - I'm old and out of shape and a lot of babes are young and much more athletic!!!! But the point is we need to keep this place feeling safe for all students - and me - to be creative - and being creative means taking chances. Learning is hard because it means that sometimes you have to give up what you thought you previously 'knew' to be true. IT MEANS CHANGE AND CHANGE IS SCARY! SO we need a SAFE classroom to create in. SO you need to keep discussions about art and not about anything that might be disturbing to creativity. See the section on Classroom Covenant. NEWS FOR TODAY *Bisque is out. Get your project, wash it and tomorrow we will talk about glazing. :) |
